i might be crazy

but, i find it extremely refreshing when i hear other Christians swear.

i don't know why.
or maybe i do.

yea, i do know.
i was just being a pansey and didn't want to write it up here, but i just talked myself into it.

it is refreshing because people swear around Christians, and then they say sorry like they broke a rule or something. People can't be themselves around Christians, speak like they speak around Christians. Why? Are Christians better than other people? More intelligent? Judgemental? umm...nope. no way. ever heard of Jesus?

So, when i hear people that are in love with Jesus swear, I know that they are not following the stupid Christian religion rulebook, and I know that regular, foolish, silly people like myself can act normal around them. I know that they are real. Not the plastic, fake, lifeless people that seem to be in a lot of churches.

And it makes me smile when Francis Chan swears, and people in the congregation gasp, and stiffen up. i am glad he did that.

Unless swearing isn't something you would normally do. Then you are just swearing to be different than other Christians.

I think this is a sensitive issue. Something that should really be thought about. I think within this issue there are things that are appropriate and things that aren't. Swearing just to be different isn't. Swearing to get an important point across to someone unaware of its importance can have its very careful place. Swearing just for the rush, that's sinful. That's placing your words above another's. It can stir needless anger inside you.

Please be careful. Satan can use this foothold. If not on you, then on someone else who reads this.

I had always viewed swearing as something of the world. I see that sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn't. Act with wisdom. Be set apart.

I felt an extreme need to say that.

Well, this is as sensitive of an issue as eating meat offered to idols (1 Corinthians 8). You know what these words are, that they can be used merely as emphatic words, and that sometimes they are used to curse men. Your knowledge makes you know which is which.

However, your brothers and sisters may have weaker consciences.

Note also that Paul, in saying that he won't eat meat offered to idols, also raises the point that it's not sinful to eat meat offered to idols. While he concedes in his lifestyle, he never concedes in his discussions, that is, he tells people it's not sinful to eat meat offered to idols while not eating meat offered to idols in order to not offend them.

I think swearing is a similar issue. It's good that you raised this point, for it brings people's awareness to it.

Therefore, if you are among brethren who have stronger consciences, then you can swear a hell of a lot more than if you are around brethren with weaker consciences. Same thing with nonbelievers. Around those who think swearing is "bad," restrain your freedom in order to reach them. You are free to be all things to all men, so let all things be done in love.

I'm one who doesn't see any value in swearing (and indeed, sees value in not swearing), but I still had to laugh when Budi threw hell at the end of his comment.

Although I'm not sure how he came from "[Paul] concedes in his lifestyle" in the 3rd paragraph to "then you can swear" in the 5th.
